Well if want spoilers... so basically he committed sucide and dan even said that in manga 'trace' that main purpose he wanted to Bully that guy(dan guy crush or lover watever) so he could make him commit sucide and and when dan's friend (who also used to Bully that guy) told dan that he died dan literally said he wished he could see the look in his face and even in this manga dan clearly mentioned at first chp when he amputated that guy with chainsaw he clearly said he don't want anything just wanted to see despair look in his eye so like this tells that dan is clearly psychopath and people were romantizing this that's why I think author released the different pov where dan has been portray as a villian either way both story are great well if you want to know about dan's past you should check that manga
