The mom has an odd relationship with her kids, she heavily relies on both of them. She most likely values Lawrence more and never wants to disappoint him. In her head she's inferior to him but with tia she is superior because Tia can't actually be put on the throne so her mother sees her as more of a tool. I think she does care for them but at the same time they're like tools to her to help raise her in status. It's very obvious she has some type of mental issue with how much she relies on them and how quick she is to beat tia but also love her after. I like this concept more than just an evil mother, it's much more fascinating because it's hard to hate her as much knowing she's got a few loose screws
Honestly I see this as a really realistic mother-children relationship because right after the abuse there's love. So we know that she still cares to an extent and reaffirms that love. Any parent can end up like her with just the amount of stress and situation she's got herself in. I don't think she's mentally ill, she's just a mother.
Oh yeah also I'm not trying to go against you or anything, it's really interesting and I really agree with most of what you mean.
No no I get where you're coming from! Instead of ill I should have said unstable which fit much better, it's not really a sickness but she is clearly not in a good mental state which would make more sense as to why she is so quick to anger with Tia.

Yeah, I sat down with my mother and talked about some sh*t. She told me that a mother’s stress is already hard enough, it’s enough to drive any mother to an unstable point. Imagine not having the guaranteed stability or even anyone who is a husband/partner figure alongside you to support you. Stress changes a person and after it’s all over, after the tantrum is only self- loathing, regret or even maybe peace. Sorry didn’t mean to go so in depth with that.
