Idk if I remember correctly but in this current life, when they were young, the mc chose carcel as her future partner and they got engaged. At first carcel wasn't enthusiastic about it, later he starts falling in love however the mc never gave carcel any attention and she created opportunities for him to cheat on her (which idk why). Carcel wanted her to give him attention and so he hooked up with the other ladies to make her feel jealous, tho she never gave af cause that was what she wanted. However after they officially got married he never touched any other woman. His cheating (FOR ME) isn't even cheating cause it's not like he betrayed her as she didnt even have any feelings for him and even after marriage she wanted him to cheat on her by purposely inviting ladies who wanted to get any opportunity to sleep with him but he clearly set boundaries. You'll understand her side of the story more once you read but as for carcel's part, I'd say the beginning chapters try to make him look really bad on purpose

Idk if you remember but earlier on Ines was convincing some lady to leave her husband this was also a part of her plan, she wanted Carcel to become known as an unfaithful playboy so that even after they're married he'd cheat and thus after Ines gives birth to their child she could divorce him using his cheating as the reason and no one would doubt her story, only Carcel surprisingly came out with that "I'd never cheat once I'm married I'm only sleeping with you" statement which throws her plans out the window, she still tried to through with it by bringing in some women (the lady in the room Carcel thought was Ines) but quickly changed her mind about leaving him.

He doesn't 'like' her, he's obsessed with her as you said. He sees her as an object he can use with no consequences. A tool, and a 'tool' to him shouldn't give its loyalty anywhere else. He wants to control her completely. Ruby is being 'nice' to him as you put it because she's afraid of him, she's been a victim of abuse for years and this is her instinct in order to protect herself and the people she loves.
