Yes I think you are right. It's so pitiful, so sad.
From an outsider point of view, it's easy to judge her and think "she was so stupid" or "she has no dignity". I mean, she did a lot of things that go against my moral values, BUT if I put myself in her situation, I understand. I would feel SO asshamed, so humilliated, and so defenceless against a man who is so powerful and terrifying. I don't know how whould I been able to tell anyone (much less my brother) what I did, so I could ask for help... :'(
