I went to a white college, and I walked in my class and my white classmates were confronting another classmate, an Asian girl. I stepped in, because she looked like she needed it, and told them to cool down, and they immediately backed down (I guess I had a try me attitude on...).

I took her to the corner and asked what happened, she started crying and told me she asked one of the girls to give her a piece of equipment. The girl claimed she was being rude in the way she asked. And the girl told me that English is not her first language. And she still has trouble speaking it and in her Chinese culture everyone speaks that way! That is not rude to them.

So, my classmate misinterpreted her intention, just like some of you!

That was 7 years ago, and we are still friends. She still jokes that before that she had misconceptions about me, but she realized that I was the nicest in the class. (...At first she did not think I was friendly...)...

I digress!

But, we both learned lessons about preconceived perceptions that day. I learned that everything is not always as I perceive it! And she learned that you cannot tell if someone is nice from their "looks"!
