between the mild homophobia and the teacher/student relationship, there is no reason for me to like this manga so much. and yet. the mangaka has a knack for comedic timing and the art style is so charming and cute… i’m a sucker for yakuza daughter stories. i think it’s a testament to this manga’s wit that it swayed me over, despite my utter disappointment that the ml is her student. at least the romance isn’t too central! 8/10

the day-to-day life of a young herbalist living in 18th century tibet. i adore slice-of-life mangas that are historical bc you can always sense the pure love and passion that goes behind researching something like this. the details of the clothing, the plants, the festivals!! it’s almost too rich in detail; my eyes couldn’t keep up. 9/10

if you prefer healthy romances and sweet couples, this is not for you. as for me, i’m the sort of sick freak who loves an emotionally constipated playboy!ml. i <3 the thrill of watching him swim in the denial of his own feelings!! delicious. the fl’s no saint either - they string each other along in a dance of unspoken words and stolen kisses. he’s def worse tho. basically: i’m obsessed with them and their banter. 7/10

the neighbors think subaru is a normal kid, living with his older sister, but he’s not. i went into this story expecting a romance, and i think that’s unhelpful and inaccurate. this is a quiet and angsty tragedy, drawn very beautifully. it’s about being stuck in the present, while pining desperately for that which you once had. it’s about mysteries and discovering old, forgotten family bonds. it’s about heartbreak. painful (but i love it). 8/10!

an og maid x nobleman manga. i just love this artist’s sense for storytelling - there are many pages where characters go without speaking, without explanation. secret looks. quick touches. truly a manga that relies on the illustration to set a scene… but prob my fave thing is the artist’s absolute fanaticism for maid uniforms… they’re so lovingly drawn, it’s a bit funny. but lovely all the same! 9/10

a young muslim slave girl lives peacefully with the mistress who treats her like a daughter. her world is violently disrupted when the mongols come to conquer the city to rip her away from everything she knows. a story set in a turbulent time of 13th century in the Mongol Empire. the art is cartoony and vivacious, yet the plot cuts unexpectedly sharp. (and it’s just getting started!) 8/10

a niece and her estranged aunt learn to live together in the wake of tragedy. i started this manga solely because i thought the aunt was handsome (and she was!!), but it was lovely to discover the depth of this story - how grief manifests strangely and belatedly, how a mother can haunt you past her death, how love can persist and grow even if you don’t feel up for the challenge. such a beautiful story with such an emotionally satisfying payoff. 10/10

ritzhard is an unpopular bachelor because of his wintry territory, and sieglind has never married due to her intimidating status as a decorated soldier. this is a peaceful tale of their cohabitation - it’s less of a romance and more of an extended series of “how it’s made” snippets. how do you make alcohol? cheese? how do you make use of every part of an animal? a soothing and lovely read, though i wish there was more mentions of the geopolitics. 8/10
