I know this is late, but I’m pretty sure They’re covered in soot. So the licking removes some of the dirt. That’s why their nose is a lil cleaner/white, after kissing. The soot rubbed off after the two touched faces, white’s snoot has a lil bit of dirt.
Black probably things the dirt makes then look tougher

Even though my sister once had a concept for a story similar to this one, reading a published work talking about this is a first for me.
Not wanting to be categorized as a female or male, not wanting to have a body with a sexual organ, sometimes I have thoughts like this, too. Others have it tough when they're constantly hit by disphoria.

The fields, the air, the solitary atmosphere... It reminds me of my childhood in the countryside. And the storytelling is so good it made me feel the emotions in the story.
