Basically Zay is seeing what originally happened. The little girl is the original zay that died young trying to save her soulmate which is asef. He was originally her soul mate.

So basically...
She is the original zay. The original zay died young because she wanted to save qsef her fated partner. That was why the original zay didn't appear in the story. Asef aas originally her fated love but because she died young to save him he 'fell' for her twin since the twin is the closest thing to his love. She was beloved by god and god had her reincarnated into the modern world and made the original world into a book. She was then back to this world again but was blessed to live in her adult form to change the story and meet her true love asef. This is why the memories are flooding in.
