You're right, at the beginning of the story, that the two protagonists may be annoying to some readers, and that's the point of the characters.
If you keep reading, you'll understand, but both protagonists are in quite poor psychological shape due to their pasts.
That's why Yeonwoo's attitude may seem "extremely shy," even though it's actually a phobia of social interaction and severe depression. And he himself admits he tends to be toxic in his relationships, the same goes for Haesol.
