I’ve never had more fun standing in an angry mob with a pitchfork tbh. Truly the most perfectly engineered loathsome top/feeble but sincere bottom drama of all time. Our boys a damn saint who took a risk opening his heart to someone who never ever deserved it and got it ground to dust underfoot. His mans a big dumb brute with an ego who couldn’t switch off long enough to realise what an angel he’d found. Our boy got pushed away and he left quietly and never stopped doing right by him, despite everything. Now we’re in for a full season of that shitheel reaping what he sowed and oooooohhh godddd yesssss!!! This is TELE. VISION. BABES. Scratches that primordial itch of wanting to see a shit boyfriend Eat His Words!!!! YESSSS

I can’t say with full honesty that I liked this story, but I can certainly say it was interesting. I found their chemistry to be absolutely STIFLING which was a big surprise, because I usually like introspective and honest MCs paired up with a dishonest lunatic. Something about it though… maybe the entire philosophical premise of lying to yourself about feeling secure in a relationship just to make it work is a bit depressing? Like yall met and went from ‘interested in one another’ to ‘married 10 years and only still together out of habit’ in a MONTH. Got a bit lost in the cyclical internal monologue spirals that never went anywhere satisfying, but were certainly thought provoking at times… yeah just a bit of an odd read.

Alright so. I’m clearly lost, I’m obviously not alone, but i’m gonna try reverse engineering this mess.
Going off character profiles cos that’ll be easier than puzzling out the plot.

Uke- immortal/terminally ill protag, stopped ageing at 16, briefly went to the states where he was a bit of a dropkick before cleaning up his act, started going to uni where there was a ‘firebird’ club that was burned down twice, worked at a company for several years when he discovered his parents and several high profile members of society were a part of a group known as ‘Immortals’ who sacrifice humans and consume them, tried to stop them before being captured himself and consumed(?), ????, was confined for several years in a basement which burned down (arson count in this webtoon is crazy don’t even try to remember which is which, there’s at LEAST five), lived in a manor briefly with fellow escapees?, started an odd jobs business in Busan lol

Director Yoon- Alleged main love interest despite never showing his damn face, abused son of business owner who went bankrupt and sent to orphanage after being looked after by protag, stewed in hate and resentment for years but it’s horny too. Has mysterious relationship ties to several other love interests through orphanage and was almost eaten by Immortals as a child. Is now the Busan branch director of some mysterious crime organisation (a jeweller is involved? remember that? there’s been 29 damn chapters i bet that feels crazy to read now.)

Jintae- HRRRGH He’s the dead love interest who passed away before the story started. STARTED OUT as son of the housekeeper but boy that changed, now is an orphan who saved himself from sacrifice by making a deal with the cult to bring other children there as sacrifices in his place (Reaper). Met Uke through parents (cult members) and fell in love. Started ‘researching’ Ukes disease, but was actually infiltrating cult and looking to bring them down once he figured out they were going to eat Uke. ?????. Somehow, he wound up in that basement with Uke, which is crazy considering Uke accused his child brother of being responsible for that when he must have been like 7 at the time? Stayed at manor where he started making eyes at some random guy and their relationship got rocky. Died in an AcCidEnT

We’re only a little ways in so far but I really like how… fair his internal monologue is. Not just to others, but to himself. He doesn’t really reproach himself as weak for needing protection, but he (quite fairly) resents the way it forces him to concede to the wishes of others when it comes to his own autonomy.

His whole internal conflict about the way the ML is in and out of his life feels so satisfyingly grounded. He knows that the ML works hard and respects his need to focus on his work, but also recognises his own need for clear boundaries in their relationship and is frustrated when the ML seems to waltz back and forth over it like it’s nothing.

He’s quick to honor the trust in his relationships, like immediately reporting on weird people or encounters, being fast to ask for help before risking his own safety trying to protect his pride etc. And it makes me think like… he’s earned better than the arms length he’s held at ‘for his own good’.

It feels like to me that the point of view character we’re looking at is the only one clued into the fact that he’s demonstrably capable of handling himself, and meanwhile everyone else is in this la la land haze of wanting to keep treating him like a child for no reason other than they can.

I feel for the guy, he’s got the right to voice his frustrations about this but he swallows a lot in the interest of everyone else’s priorities. I feel like we’re heading to a point where the lack of context our MC is given about his own abilities and vulnerabilities is going to put him in danger because he’ll act, thinking he’s safer than he actually is. And if that does happen I think he’ll scream for realsies.

this is one that i’ve reread the available chapters of like 3 times now. These two are so so so good.

Now hold on now hang on hang on WHERE was this scene in the novel?!?!!? I DONT REMEMBER **THIS??**

This is one of the ones where I think the webtoon adaptation adds a lot compared to reading the novel. Abel is a much more… consistent feeling character, Karas feels a lot less cold-blooded (positive) and the jokes land way harder. I’m really glad, because the premise and storytelling is so unique, I feel like the artist cares about these characters a lot.

These two are so peaceful and relaxing to read. I love the pacing of this, and the emotional core, they’re so lovely.

man what the hell is going on. Everyone here is a horned up, sociopathic looney toons character. Like is there character development? I don’t know! It’s not like anyone makes motivated by anything other than the doughy, primordial gland deep within their brains that tells them to abandon all reason and chase after whatever red shiny thing shows up in front of them. The webtoon is actually so consistent about how batshit everyone is that it’s basically unlike anything else i’ve ever read. It’s like a really messed up season of gay desperate housewives. Fascinating, hope I never encounter it ever again.

It’s certainly not BAD but… I agree with the other commenters who say the character focus in this comic is all over the place. The lead pretty underdeveloped compared to the love interest, who has these deeply intricate IMMEDIATE goals that are overlapping with one another and meanwhile our guy is over here like… feeling a little bit like he’s randomly inserted himself into someone else’s business. Probably not helped by the fact that the love interest, on the surface, seems waaaay less invested in the relationship and a lot more like he’s just going along with everything.

Because of that, the chemistry just isn’t there. They don’t really have anything in common or have a dynamic, and its not like they went the opposite route and had the main character hopelessly throw himself at a disinterested guy which at least would have been more interesting, it just feels a bit soggy.

Like I said, it’s not bad, individually all the pieces are good, the arts gorgeous etc. but it’s less than the sum of its parts.

Wow talk about a train wreck. Very good read, dark themes aside. The author did a great job setting up these dominos and then driving a semi truck through them.

Nice to see a romantic horror where the male lead isn’t some kind of superpowered uber jigsaw with all the answers + is capable of making the kinds of obvious mistakes that happen when you try and control someone’s life and can’t empathise with them. Also cool to see a MC who has the capacity to recognise where his boundaries are despite the best efforts made to gaslight him, knows how to be suspicious and make obvious logical leaps. It puts them both on more even ground and that makes their conversations super interesting, especially when they realise they were never on the same page.
