needed to rant more abt this chapter bcoz i will be found dead in a ditch b4 i stop yapping abt character relationships
shima believes himself to be unlovable and evil and mean and terrible so he feels disillusioned when he asks mitsumi why she liked him and she says its because he’s kind. shima wanted mitsumi to give him a reason he hadn’t thought of, something complicated, something ugly, something beneath his cheerful facade. believing someone like mitsumi would see something he hadn’t. what he failed to realize was even if he had no kind intent, his active efforts towards making mitsumi comfortable (regardless of his apparent ‘facade’) created a genuine connection with mitsumi. shima sees the fact he actively exerted effort into being kind, as a testament to his lacking character/ugliness. but mitsumi saw his efforts, and attributed it to his goodness. LIKEOMG AAAAAAGGHHH.
shima has coasted through life fine, in fact his facade had allowed him to. mitsumi had also seen the goodness in his act, confirming that he’s fine as he is. which is why its so commendable that shima said he wanted to become someone worthy of mitsumi.
