it was to a point where she apparently forgot abt it due to trauma. I've read that Johannes would hit her if she didnt learn her lessons properly :(
shuri repressed her trauma from johannes, who was only interested because in shuri because she had a very strong resemblance to the late empress, his first love or something. So he would hit her and try to shelter her from leaving him “again” (previous empress flashbacks)

From what I remember tho, it was more emotional trauma than physical. I think he didn't hurt her physically that much but put a looot of stress on her to perform well, and other stuff included. I think once he shut himself in a room and hurt himself and there was blood coming from the door. Shulli was right there all along, he did it to punish her 'cause she wasn't doing something right. She panicked so much after seeing all that blood. Again I don't remember much cause I read the spoiler long ago
I like that the mom is struggling to change because honestly before chp 44 and 45 she really hasn't needed to change her ways. She claims shes doting her daughter in this life by buying her nice things and feeding her good food but thats easy when youre the empress. Its only now that she has to change her temper and her willfulness to trully love and respect her daughter
