You probably used bonus coins that were given out for different stories. If there's a picture of a dog next it, then those are regular bonus coins you can use for every story you like. If there's a picture of another story next to it then you can only use them for that particular story. You can look at your bonus coin history to see which coins are for what.
Bonus coins are often title specific. So check that. Other than that you should be able to use bonus coins just like regular coins
