they're both not bad people but the reason why it didn't work out is because they're a mismatch couple... Personality and love language wise both of them are soooo different.

Her reaction, I think. If he had killed the husband, she would be less willing to go along with what he says. She would hate him more than she already does. By leaving the husband alive, he can appear (somewhat) merciful and get cooperation out of her at the same time.
