I believe it was to stabilize his pheromones and to help regulate his heat. His pheromone level was so low and unsteady that it was debilitating to him to the point he had to retire from skating, but Cheongho's pheromones raised his to the point that he could safely have surgery and return to skating professionally (at least that's how I interpreted it) :)
