Because what she summons are spirits and souls, they use power because of her power, so she can't use it to kill herself, at least that's what I undertood. And also she doesn't think she's strong enough to break that body completelly which is why she needs someone stronger than her.

yea technically he is hypnotized. but it's revealed that people who genuinely do care about penelope like calisto, reynold, Winter are unable to be completely hypnotized by yvonne. basically derek was an asshole who didn't care about penelope from the start, so yvonne just needed to push him a little bit.
