ok but he's from brazil? and hold up. where is it racist? the only thing i see exaggerated is his nose. there's nothing to show that all latinos looks this way when you contrast with the other south american members. his build is meant to portray his part in the group, like his name states, "heavy tank".

Consider other Black anime characters like from Bananafish and Fireforce. You can have features predominantly attributed to Black folx like wider noses, but another main difference is that his face is very different from other characters in their typical manga-esque derivatives. His eyes are drawn as if their bulging, it’s different from every other character and probably every character to come. The author probably did not intend to draw him with malice, but the implication and impact of this character sends a subconscious message. It’s fair to call it out when you see it.

but that's the whole point of his character. malice and egoism. the mangaka exaggerated the same eyes with the wanimia twins. mr. ego is also heavily exaggerated with bulging eyes to show his intense and insane personality. this is merely the mangaka's art style. there are no subconscious messages when other members that are POC are not exaggerated like that because their personalities are not the same.

also i'm sorry to say, but fire force is a dull representation of POC. if you pay attention closely to the art the only african traits you see are the hairstyles (which other cultures and races adopt as well) and skin color. banana fish is a lot more realistic because it's whole concept is to portray a story on realism and depend on it's character's to reflect this mood of realism. in contrast blue lock depends heavily on exaggeration of plot and situations which are reflected by each character's exaggerated expressions and emotions throughout the game.

i'm just putting this out there. just because there's a person of color that looks evil, does not mean that the mangaka is suggesting that all people of color are stereotypically evil. it is merely a plot device and there were plenty of villains from different races as well. i can understand being a bit skeptical about it, but calling it "lowkey racist" is just being ignorant and insensitive.

That’s true. I think there has just been such a long and tiresome history with bipoc characters being treated and represented as gags that people want to be sure that it’s not happening again. It’s valid to question and call it out, but you are right to bring up other characters too. I actually completely forgot about Mr. Ego and his wild look. This was a good conversation, I appreciate your response.

yeah. i enjoyed your response too. i am just tired of this justified white knight talk about what's racist or not when it's really just nothing. it's like a person trying to call out an artist for making an asian's eyes "too narrow" when it's alright because some asians do in reality have narrow eyes. i'll be honest, the people who call out racism on small things like a few racial jokes are sometimes the most racist out of all of us.

I actually understood where you were coming from until your last comment. You calling it “white knight talk” and coming at me saying I’m the most racist out of all of us just for pointing out that dark skinned characters in anime are often portrayed with this stereotype says a lot. This is not something uncommon and I’m not calling out the author, I don’t and even you don’t know their intentions for drawing them a certain way so don’t act like you do. if it’s to reflect their personality, I don’t think it’s good to compare it to the twins or Mr. Ego. there’s no need to give him grotesque buck teeth and a fat nose compared to ego’s “intense” eyes.

i also do indeed am not aware of the mangaka's intentions. i have read your argument link and it does state out the reasons why it comes off as racist. big nose, big teeth, loud personality are usually stereotypes about dark-skinned characters and it could come off as enforcing these awful stereotypes and assumptions put on people of color. but like you said neither of us know the mangaka's intentions.

i believe that the mangaka wasn't trying to do anything awful but rather create a character that would fit the standards or situation they're in. dada shuba plays football and is named the heavy tanker which would explain his broad build. contrasting to sister krone, she has a different situation where she is a "mother" that cares for children so her broad build is heavily exaggerated when she doesn't work out. the fact that he's a football player would explain his exaggerated figure and his personality which is loud and malicious. i use mr ego's intense eyes as an example and justification that the mangaka exaggerates characters appearance to match their personality. i'm not trying to say that the design is perfectly fine, it has it's obvious stretches but i do have faith that the mangaka artist merely didn't want to "soften" his looks which would contrast against his personality. but he probably overdid it.

also for the fat nose and buck teeth, i honestly think that the mangaka was basing the character off a fellow football player's looks and greatly exaggerated his looks. dada shuba looks like a way buffer version of ronaldinho but without the charming smile.

also i'm sorry about that. i actually wasn't referring to you when i was talking about the white knight thing. it's just that many people try to defend POC and minority groups for things that are assumed "racist" when in reality it's generally nothing. i've seen a lot of people call out racial jokes then proceed to tell a black person "oh sorry i don't have any money" when being asked a question on the street. and as a person from a minority group it bothers me when other people try to "defend" my people while being so hypocritical.
