When chase was in rut he took medication and fell unconscious, he didn't wanna sleep around like his brothers so he always take medication. And when he woke up his brother told him he fuck a dog while he was in rut because he couldn't control himself. After that chase was never able to rid of his fear for dog.
Also, if you read this chapter nicely. It is implied that Chase wish to just die and be at peace. If Josh hasn't come into his life he probably would have died young.
