Feels like this is written by a man. Which isn't inherently bad but its very clear that they write the female characters based on stereotypes and limited deep interaction with women.

I think this story being short is what makes it so poetic. The final chapters wouldn't have had the same impact that they did if they were instead put in the middle of a story.
