Alternatively if you want them to hook up, have masaki get in the accident when he is already of age, like the car accident happened when he was like 20 or something, but he still remembers that sensei that checked his teeth when he was a kid and how sad he was so he decided to go to him or something, the rest would still be the same.

i love it how in most asian countries there's this whole thing about the names you call other people, like it almost always goes with a sufix for respect, and when you're close you use their given name or other sufix and it just adds a new level of intimacy between couples.
I feel so weird cause in my country you just call everyone their first name from the get go and nicknames are almost like a norm lol
