If I remember correctly, he was punished and sent to work in the mines. While there, he was beaten by his superior every other day, suffered severe trauma, and the male lead wanted to keep him alive as long as possible so he could continue suffering for the rest of his life.
I remembered there was a scene where the ml checked how he's doing and asked the guy incharge to like 'take good care' of maximo in terms of like not killing him and prolonging his suffering??

That kind brink to death situation ....that's why khalid also wanted to punish Maximo. The punishment is like near end where everyone is punished.
Maximo's character is like also you know obssessed with renato.. he thinks like he owns him or like he was there fist type of situation.
