Being broken up with honestly fucks some people up much harder than you're willing to grant. Especially if you're gay and have never even had the chance to so much as flirt with someone, when you get to your first relationship you put all your eggs in one basket and set yourself up for a very hard fall.
I agree that Alex's rudeness has been unwarranted, but expecting him to be capable of relationships just because other people handle getting dumped is not entirely fair on his circumstances. A lot of people are terrified of relationships, and saying "man up" doesn't make their anxieties vanish.
