To me it looks like the type of story were one is in love with her best friend since high school (and think she's straight, but can't keep her mind of her so thats why short relationships) and so said friend realized her feelings late at college and feels jealous and left out.
That plot twist is even better in the original translation, where they make clear daughter already knew about Sol.
(In OG translations, she says something along the lines "this boy is much like my brother and sol, my mother'll hate him)
