that's what I felt initially too, like, main character syndrome much, really was quite disgusted by him, but then I read someone else's comment bout how he was just unable to not pay attention to redhead and rationalized it like the socially idiot he is and confused crushing on red to hating him, because when you think about it, who when wanting to ruin someone's college experiences also chooses to ruin his own? like, he's also forcing himself to still go through all that stalker behavior when he could go other routes but he's subconsciously fine with it because that way redhead's life doesn't just get tangled up, but it gets tangled up with him, it forces redhead to not just be unhappy but also be constantly conscious and thinking of him. I mean, it's messy and silver hair sure sucks but it's not as bad as my first variant (〜￣△￣)〜
