This shows how Kirino and Mashima's mothers directly impacted their lives and how they allowed or didn't allow themselves to be who they are. Mashima's mom accepting him...allowed him to be who he was although it was still difficult meanwhile Kirino's mom...led him to still want to let his mother be happy. I think he mainly did this because he felt like he owed her so much more for what his father did, although it wasn't even his fault...but that's how kids think.
