This is just my understanding. I think he said that because, other than the fact he need someone to take the role as Head of the House, there isnt really enough reason for Johannes to choose Shuli as his wife

The count was about to drop a bomb- when he said "maybe....." before he totally got interrupted by the Empress

If you read the chapters again- you can see the surprise look on the empress face, like she has an idea what the count was about to say

My guess is he was about to say something about Johannes liking the previous empress??

I believe he wanted to spill the beans and the empress didn't want it to be revealed.. For some reason... As I find it the past empress might be the lover of of shuli dead husband because the emperor mentioned the past empress is mad at him and she is back for revenge because of what he did to the dead husband. The emperor might have connection of what caused the death of the husband of shuli. So when the emperor mentioned she is back the past empress.. In his mentality that shuli is the past empress and is back for revenge for the death of husband.. The past empress as I what I understood so far she might have connection with him or he is her lover that maybe the emperor killed him and somehow the past empress escaped or died or killed herself... And something bothers me when the empress stopped the trial so fast because the brother in law of shuli was going to reveal the truth and she panicked so maybe the blonde kid and the shitty arrogant prince might be half siblings and their mother was the empress.. And also the reason why Shuli was chosen to be his wife only by paper.. Maybe because she remind him of the past empress and he is fond of her and you can see an old memory where the brother in law saw his brother looking at the past empress for a long period... It sucks that the empress stopped the trial and the truth wasn't revealed and also maybe shuli would be freed being the kids step mother and she can go and do the dreams and wishes she wanted to accomplish like she wanted in her past. ╥﹏╥

But I think after the wife is divorced she will have to come back to her old family. Right? Or am I wrong?

Not really.. But she no longer keep the family name of her husband but her real family.. She can after that leave and go accomplish her childhood dream somewhere far from her family.

More importantly didn't the fairytail say he would become king ?!
