Yeah it was for safety because that knife/sword was actually a relic that can protect her and the dad actually BEGGED the prince to save her but she misunderstood #－.－)
I'm more than positive that it was meant to protect herself while in the room. Maybe they were planning on rescuing her after? I mean Max was his displine. In my interpretation he gave her the knife for her protection and prepared max to save her. Since he negleted the FL and failed to inform her about the rumours about the crown prince are false. FL thought he wanted her to suffer forever(she thinks he cares about his loyalty more than her).
