It's definitely weird, but that's just manga plots for you lol. Chapter 0 explains his motivations. He "failed" to save his childhood friend, and therefore feels guilty and wants to prevent someone else from dying.
He’s not suicidal too . His childhood friend died while doing nothing to help when he saw those signs. So he feels guilty and sees the suicidal man as someone he feels he needs to take care of to relieve him of his guilt in not being able to be there for hood childhood friends when he needed someone the most.
