Although if he didnt have to appease his ppl then he prob wouldnt have even gone that far. His ppl would have mutinied or attacked innocents if he didnt used this method to appease them.
But thinking about it, it's not such a dark plot twist.
I mean, he only lied about the public hair to give him more confidence about himself. As a friend, I would probably do it too if needed.
Also, he never pushed him in any way against his friends and never stopped the girl who supposedly had a crush on the mc. He was just faster in approaching him than her in the end.

I would understand wanting to keep them apart if he still had that bad behavior (caused by his ex boyfriend, not even born from an evil personality), but you can totally see that Masato is being honest about his feelings and that he seriously likes him....
