That is how they're "glossing it over", the comical atmosphere distracts you from the severity of the situation if you let it.
You're right, it was disgusting the way he pulled someone's kid to the side under the pretense of just wanting to bandage his knee and then felt the kid up and tried to convince the kid to follow him into the nearby bushes and get naked with him... Well he did mention he was playing because he was forced to, all the way back in the first ten chapters or so. Something like, "I don't really like playing it." Honestly can't blame him...I hate playing the piano too, but was forced to go all the way to Grade 8 and ended up skipping almost every grade.
Amamiya'd probably have quit if he was allowed to--his parents are the ones forcing him to, and his "win or die" competitiveness he cultivated was due to this as well. He's honestly very believable, much like every other character in the series. You don't have to like him, but you do have to acknowledge that he was doing a very human thing, traits which you have also displayed.
Kai is different from Amamiya. For Kai, the piano saved him and has been a constant source of support and salvation for him. For Amamiya, it is merely a means of getting to reach his dad (and along the way it became the goal of defeating Kai).
Don't get me wrong I like amaiya I just hate when he treats kai badly over his competitive side but yeah at first he only did it because that was a goal his parents had for him but I feel like slightly because of Kia he is starting to like piano for his own hence why he now has his own sound even tho it's Not technically perfect.
