Well, I don't think things are that bad atm really. We knew that this was going to be down to the last defence from the beginning, so it makes sense that there would be a setback at this point. But the Duke has been pulling some strings while away and seems pretty confident, so I think they're still at a good place right now. Plus the chapter literally ended with her love appearing in front of her just as she wished for him to!
I think the grief we're all dreading is going to present itself at her debut ball, during it or soon after. Her feelings for him are growing so so much that it wouldn't surprise me if she decides to confess them to him at the ball, the very peak of her rebirth as a free and innocent woman. And the way these things tend to go, that's usually the moment an author decides it's time to stab a knife into our hearts and twist it hard...
