Wow, his reasons for not having sex is pretty much like mine! Indeed, the 0.001 chance to get a pregnancy is still scary, so I just hold on 'till I have a job, at least. I'm amazed with how I could find a character just like me.
I personally think it's scary how many peoples don't think about the possible consequence of the action at least. I am not saying that everyone should avoid doing it because of a small chance like that, but everyone should know about that small chance and be ready to be responsible for it if pregnancy happen.
The chances are so slim and there are options (day after pill/abortion) if something does happen, which is rare if you aren't an idiot. IE typically you should be doubling up on anti-pregnancy options if you're that worried, such as BC pills plus condoms.
The thing I find scary about people today is more on the STD spectrum. How they don't get tested/have never been tested. How they get insulted if you request that they get tested before having sex. How they sleep around (totally ok) without condoms (not ok) and don't get tested/take people at face value when they say they don't have anything. THAT is scary.
I'm the same as the guy character as well, I'm not going to change it for anyone. Luckily in my situation my partner is understanding and practices consent. I don't see their relationship working out
