I guess JJK inherited his father's abusive behaviour and mentally grew up thinking that Money and Being rich is the only solution to his poverty and to win over people. He really worked hard on his own to become what he is. That explains alot about the behaviour how he never takes breaks and hates to lose. On other side Dan also grew up in poverty too, he also worked hard as a normal society kid would. But since Dan is a soft person in general people always took advantage of him, and so did JJK I'm thinking when grandma told JJK about Dan that's where he hit the nail. Because dan worked his way up even if he can't fight or shit. He understood that Dan was no different from him. and the guilty tripping started to hit him
