For a psychological story, this isn't mentally taxing, imo. It was confusing at first but everything is explained properly at the end. Also, although the two protagonists have their own issues, it's not like they're bad people at heart. Due to their family environment, they have this trauma response that might seem odd to others, but you'll get it if you read it through to the end
