I don't think this revelation is as sudden as people seem to think? We've learned that he does actually have depth and trauma, but that he's been really single-minded his entire life and always focused on one goal at a time. That's just his personality. He was already focused on getting Dan back because he couldn't fight, so I think it's only natural that all of that time focused on one goal + the conversation he had with his old coach would help him realize what he feels. Now, his new goal is going to be fixing things.
