MC can't leave ML's house until he has enough money to rent himself a new place. Saving up would take him a while, and he's still need to pay off the rest of his debts to Jk (if he doesn't, he could earn a reputation as a scammer, and who'd hire him?), and that's all provided he STAYS working there, where the pay is good... The only other option is getting hired somewhere else with an equal or even better pay, but his new employers would need to pay off Dan's debts to Jk, in order to do that, and thus Dan would not be free, he could just change creditors... AGAIN.
