- Jess is a vampire out hunting with his friends. After feeding, he strays too close to a nearby slave camp and is badly burned. The next day, the camp’s commandant finds him and locks him in a cell. There, Jess meets Yohan, once a respected physician, now reduced to a slave like the rest. Yohan is ordered to nurse Jess back to health and if he fails, his own life will be on the line. Jess soon discovers the commandant plans to exploit him for research into a rare disease, and he begins plotting his escape. But Yohan is not the broken man he pretends to be, and Jess quickly realizes their meeting is no coincidence, it’s the start of something far more insidious

- The introduction throws you straight into brutality and moral decay. It’s set in a World War II-esque world of camps, slavery, and unauthorized human experimentation. Here humans and vampires coexist, but fear and exploitation define their relationship.
- Jess, as a vampire is usually a predator, but now he’s trapped as prey after Commandant Philip captures him. Despite his monstrous label, he shows empathy and restraint, often more “human” than the humans around him.
- Yohan, a physician, is more of a monster than Jess. He tortures in the name of research, he’s calm and calculated, driven by recognition and survival than morality. His strained ties to Philip suggest either illegitimacy or insecurity, which could explain his obsessive need to prove himself.
- The writing blends personal trauma with larger systems of cruelty. Jess’s past, Yohan’s family struggles, and the tense dynamic between them adds depth.
- It’s unsettling but compelling, with strong world building, intense characters, and potential for something powerful if the pacing holds steady.
How about research guy × K? There’s some real enemies to lovers potential there. Their interests are total opposites, but imagine if they start sacrificing parts of themselves for each other, that’d be so sweet. And little A can go with Milton, since they’re equally freaky. Or not, no need to tie the freaks down to single relationships. Let them have as many as they want, I’d be happy with that.
