Ch 6 pg 20 is actually referring to a medical condition called eclampsia, it is when the mother does not have enough calcium stores in her body to breast feed the baby (there can be other causes but I'm guessing this is the case they are specifically referring to), these are stored deep within us, within our bones, so when it is all gone it is a very, very serious thing, and once a mother has eclampsia she will most likely get it again. It starts with a fever and then progresses to seizures and organ failure/death.
This is what they're referring to by his consuming her, he "consumed" all of her nutrients. A mother will not die if she does not have the baby, so in a way that's correct, but I've never thought about it like that! I really love this narrative on this condition!
