I agree. For a moment it looked like the mc might just be clinging to his ex because he was scared of dealing with this new reality all on his own. But now that he's found new courage to pull through by doing the job that he's always loved, he should become able to figure out whether he really liked his ex or just liked having someone to "shelter him".
