Mc was trapped in a horrible relationship, one he wanted to keep going cause he truly liked that asshole and didn't see how he was slowly breaking everything around them. So good on him for leaving, but also he is traumatized. Also, his ex tried to kill himself in front of him because of how obsessed he was with him, so... Yeah, i think he has reason to be the way he is, and to be scared of that whole thing happening again (even if it's a bit irrational)
