There's a major difference between bad endings and unhappy endings.What's important is if it makes sense narratively and emotionally.
Take Game of Thrones - betrayed a majority of its fans with it's final season that now it's become taboo and practically never talked about.
A good example is Gravity Falls. Fans collaborated together to solve the major overarching mystery and were so successful (and super early, there was still a lot of the series left) that the original creator and the team pulled an elaborate hoax claiming someone leaked important info and were able to throw everybody off and regain interest in the show.
