I think he was thinking about his unhappy childhood or his parents' deaths or something equally heavy and depressing, i don't remember. Anyways it's kind of hard to pay attention to your surroundings in general when you're that depressed and brooding. He eventually snapped out of it and noticed her outfit when she got mad since it was so shocking for him to do so but by then it was too late.
