Yeah I know but he went back in time and had a hella fine life with his buddy till he died right?
I think the point is that he died so that timeline and his existence was over. Perhaps that is considered tragic in its own sense without counting for his 'rebirth' or sorts in the new timeline. His life in one sense was over. And it had kind of a whole bittersweet feel to it by the end.
