yea i get that honestly lol. idk maybe i have to start steering clear of stories w toxic families bc they're only stressful? my line of reasoning is just that unless the character actively tried to harm the mc (like the father in this story or mielle in the villainess reverses the hourglass), they deserve to have a CHANCE at redemption in the story (i mean, i believe that everyone should have a chance for redemption, not just non-murderous people, but that doesn't apply to gabrielle so i'm not going to get into it here).
a lot of times its prejudice and upbringing as a byproduct of having a certain childhood/parents that causes people to turn out selfish or ignorant or otherwise bad people (it's a different story if they're murderous or whatever, and that should be dealt with seperately).
how we're raised is largely out of our control. why not give someone, when confronted with all of the facts and perspectives, the chance to learn from that experience and become a better person? in a lot of comics we have these anti-heroes or otherwise morally compromised mcs who are able to grow from their mistakes and it's the character arc that makes it a fulfilling story.
it's just interesting to me how people decide who deserves a second chance and who deserves to just get punished. it's really just arbitrary and dumb in my opinion idk. like how do you decide someone's life like that?
