I think author made people of this world very dumb. I mean people from long time know that trees are useful for rainfall . Ancient people were not stupid . That’s because the don’t need trees. They have magic to make up for it. And this is a story, they aren’t going to have the same past as we do and this will not have the same knowledge. Granted it’s dumb that they didn’t think about trees, but I bet the the prosperous cities aren’t using trees to fund their water but something magic related that the smaller villages don’t have
