I don’t think they fell out of love though, not ugetsu at least. And it would be pretty unfair to put it as it was “natural” for kaji to be with ugetsu. Ugetsu realized one day that akihiko would never be happy with him because to kaji, his existence means suffering. And it’s not that kaji doesn’t know this, he only realized after he started living with haruki instead. “All along I have been playing the violin for the sake of being on the same level as you. I thought I had nothing but this because there was just you. Yet I felt suffocated”
Even though ugetsu after realizing, immediately told akihiko that they should end things, he could never bring himself to leave akihiko. So the whole time he has been doing everything to spite akihiko so he would leave
“I have been pushing him away but he hasn’t given up on me at all. I have been trying to leave him but it seems I’m like I’m not good at doing that so...”
“I have been waiting for him to let go of me.”
He really still loved kaji, but he knew they just could never be happy together. I think for ugetsu, he ever really had kaji and had no one else to talk to so he warmed up to mafuyu really quickly because he thought ah this guy would understand me and mafuyu did.
“I’m the lowest son of a bitch towards akihiko and I guess he hates me you know. But I love him to death.”
So when akihiko does not come back after a few weeks, he is a mess and when he finally comes back and tells ugetsu “I have been enjoying music these days.” “I want to get out of here and play a different kind of music”, it must have been a nail in the coffin for ugetsu. Because finally kaji has realized that this could never work and things are really ending. That it was finally determined a hopeless love. Ugetsu looked pretty shaken up and maybe it was really quite a shock? Two years and kaji always came back and now he never would.
Akihiko has found people he would be happier with and thats great for him and ugetsu knows this too. More than Akihiko falling in love with haruki, it was more like he wanted happiness for himself and being with haruki and playing music with him made him happy. And then he fell in love with haruki and music again. But I do wish sensei will give someone for ugetsu as well. The way he was crying when they actually broke up was extremely heartbreaking. He was silently choking up and when he turned around to reach for akihiko but he was already gone and not looking back. Ugetsu could never leave kaji but he had to let go.
