The most reasonable birthing process I've come across was a book series I read. One has were born with an "omega line" across their pelvis. When it was time to give birth the line would separate and the baby would come out there. Then the line would seal up over a couple of days.
The series is called The Mercy Hills Pack and it's by Ann-Katrin Byrde. Last I checked there were five books.
