Don't have to be when it comes to the fictional world. I'm more for the character's personalities if their elements will clash, meld, or ignore one another. Makes it more interesting to see besides for these kind of ships. A pairing could just be the butterfly kiss kind of love we're talking about where they only hold hands and talk about sweet nothings never said they have to get x rated not all do. Also it's a fun thing readers like to do to map out how couples are made or born through a series creation till it's completion because here's a shocker reason some times the creators do learn and play towards their fans which only make them that more supportive.
