I also think it's reflective of their mindset as warrior-adventurers. At least, that would be the logical conclusion for Edmund, who proposed the idea. I doubt that Edmund cared for Douglas all that much; he's more the type to value people by their worth, and Douglas was quickly dropping in 'value' by the time they cursed him. The only person Edmund seems to truly care about is Alan.
And since it was proposed by the smartest person he knew, Alan had no issues with cursing Douglas. He lost his parents at a young age and never properly developed his social skills, so he probably had no idea how to go about talking Douglas out of his self-destructiveness. They are both people who value strength over everything else, and that is reflected in the way they solve problems.
Sorry for the info-dump, I just really wanted to take a literary perspective on this. I agree that it's tragic when people believe that they have to hurt others in order to protect them. But going through pain and heartbreak is a part of being human, and we come out stronger for it ^_^
