Maybe the reason they are scared of him is that he had to do something really violent to protect his town (to some maggots or people who were a threat to the town), the towns-people saw this (without knowing a real reason) and now are scared....

So I think there are a few reasons why Byul and Siwoo's friendship fall apart years ago and why Siwoo is trying to be distant:
1. They both were clasiffied as alphas - Siwoo probably had a crush on Byul, but since they are both alphas he thought is not possible for them to be in a relationship couse they won't be a "normal" couple.
2. Byul was a trainee to become an idol and as we (saddly) know - idols can't date or be in a relationship. That's why Siwoo become even more distant.
3. Byul was really oblivious that Siwoo had a crush on him and Siwoo thought he doesn't like him back or even considering him as a potential partner.
One is probably canon, I can feel it in my nuggets
